2008 Phoenix Chinese Week Events Schedule

                                                          FEBRUARY 4-10, 2008


Phoenix Chinese Week Committee, in cooperation with the Phoenix Sister Cities Commission, is proud to present CHINESE WEEK 2008,  a series of cultural, social and educational events celebrating the rich and diverse Chinese ethnic and cultural heritage. Chinese Week 2008 events will be held throughout the greater Phoenix area February 4th thru the 10th. 2008.  Highlights of this tribute to the Valley's Chinese community and Phoenix's Sister City of Chengdu, China, will include a three-day Culture and Cuisine Festival, a variety performance show from Taipei, Children's Pavilion and a Chinese New Year Banquet.

The Chinese New Year is traditionally celebrated on the first lunar moon.  In Chinese, the lunar New Year is known as "Spring Festival".  According to the Chinese Zodiac, this is the Year of the Rat or Year 4706.

Chinese Cultural Journeys and School Outreaches
Chinese Week's Children's Pavilion will have Chinese Culture Journeys and School Outreaches that provide complimentary instructions and demonstrations of Chinese culture, Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, paper folding and arts & crafts to schools and corporations.

Chinese Week Art Contest   K-9th Grades
Students from kindergarten to ninth grade are eligible to participate in Chinese Week's Painting/Drawing Contest with the theme "What I Know about Chinese Culture".  The deadline for submissions is Saturday, January 19th, 2008.

Phoenix Chinese Week Taiji Tournament
9 a.m. - 1 p.m.      World Martial Arts Academy      2028 N. 16th St., Phoenix
The Taiji tournament is co-sponsored by Phoenix Chinese Week and the Phoenix Taiji Club.  There will be five competitions: individual Taiji Quan solo and Taiji sword solo for men and women, plus group Taiji Quan/Taijii Sword (3 to 6 people per group).  Everyone is welcome to join the competition and celebrate the Year of the Rat.
Admission to each competition is $5 per competitor.

Opening Reception and Press Conference

The opening reception and press conference kick off the week-long celebration and activities of Chinese Week 2008. It also acknowledges the affiliation between Phoenix Chinese Week and the cities of Phoenix, Arizona and Chengdu, China.

Official Grand Opening Ceremony

Local and Chengdu dignitaries will kick off Chinese Week 2008 Culture and Cuisine Festival.  The opening ceremony will feature live entertainment and cultural activities.

Chinese Cultural Center      668 N. 44th St., Phoenix
Experience the sights, sounds and tastes of the 18th annual Phoenix Chinese Week's Culture and Cuisine Festival.  Enjoy continuous live entertainment including the famous dragon and lion dance, martial arts demonstrations, folk dances, musical performances, popular Children's Pavilion and more.  Shop at souvenir and arts & crafts booths, watch demonstrations by master chefs and taste the scrumptious Chinese cuisine presented by the Chinese Restaurant Association of Arizona.  This event is free and open to the public, but parking is $5 per vehicle (partial proceeds from parking go to cultural events and education).

Dragon Boat Display
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Traditional dragon boats donated by the city of Taipei, Taiwan to the City of Phoenix in honor of the 25th anniversary of their sister cities relationship.

Koi Show
Valley of the Sun Koi Club is sponsoring the Greater Phoenix Koi  and Goldfish shows.  See the highest quality koi and goldfish that will be competing in national shows. There also will be vendors from around the country for all of your pond or garden needs. A koi auction will take place Sunday.

Childrens Pavilion

The Children's Pavilion provides free instruction and demonstrations of Chinese calligraphy, translating English names into Chinese, paper foldings, dough art, paper cuttings and other cultural arts and crafts.  Children of all ages can enjoy the complimentary cultural  hands-on activities reflecting Chinese culture, art, crafts, customs and heritage.

Food Pavilion

A tour of delicious Chinese Cuisine featuring different regions and styles, including an all vegetarian menu. Experience the distinctive and unique tastes that will please everyone's palate.

Chinese Cultural Village: Chinese Inventions and History Booth
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and  Sunday
See what the Chinese contributed to the world.  Learn how to use the abacus - the "Chinese computer" - to solve mathematical problems and discover other inventions, including the printing block, kites, compasses and more.  Glimpse the traditional attire of the different Chinese dynasties.  Pictures, Chinese puppets and other artifacts depicting the history of Chinese inventions will also be exhibited.

Chinese Cultural Theater
10 a. m. - 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and  Sunday
Enjoy traditional and cultural topics such as Chinese calligraphy, weddings, instruments, printing, festivals and foods in the Chinese Cultural Theater.  Demonstrations and presentations of diverse topics will be scheduled throughout the three-day event.

Photo Exhibit
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and  Sunday
Featuring photos of the Chinese community in the Valley from the past to the present, showing different organizations and services at work and play.

Mah-Jong Booth
Noon - 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday only
Learn the art of Mah-Jong tiles as you watch demonstrations and have an opportunity to try your hand at this popular game.

Phoenix Cup Weiqi (GO) Open Tournament

11 a.m. - 6 p.m.       Chinese Cultural Center 668 N. 44th St., Phoenix   Suite #105
This is the Fourth Phoenix Cup Weiqi (Go) Open Tournament.  The tournament is co-sponsored by Phoenix Chinese Week  and the AZ Go Club of AGA (American Go Association). The tournament is free and open to the public. All games will be played according to AGA rules. The tournament will adapt the partial circulation method for the games. A total of 3 rounds will be played. There will be 3 sections: (A) 2d and above, (B) 5k - 1d and (C) 6k and below.
Everyone is welcome to celebrate the Year of the Boar, and promote Weiqi (Go), an important element of Chinese Culture.
